Hurricane Dorian was supposed to touch down this past weekend and create massive damage along the southern part of the United States. States like Florida, South Carolina and North Carolina did not get hit anywhere near as hard as initially anticipated.
That doesn’t mean that Dorian didn’t do tremendous damage to areas outside of the United States. The Bahamas in particular, was hit very hard. 2020 presidential hopeful, Beto O’Rourke is calling on President Trump to help the people who are fleeing the devastation.
O’Rourke began by slamming the President for his poor record on the environment. He said in a statement, “His administration’s failure to take action on climate change and its continuous rollbacks of environmental protections have left communities vulnerable to storms increasing in intensity and frequency like Hurricane Dorian.”
The candidate continued his statement by calling on Trump to give aid to the people who have been affected by the storm. “It’s on Donald Trump and the United States of America to put the health and safety of people first and to step up to provide aid and refuge to those whose livelihoods have been destroyed by Dorian,” said O’Rourke.
Earlier in the week, the President did promise that he would be giving some form of aid to the island. He tweeted, “The U.S. may be getting a little bit lucky with respect to Hurricane Dorian, but please don’t let down your guard. As it heads up the coast, lots of very bad and unpredictable things can happen! On the other hand, the Bahamas have been devastated. We are sending crews to help!”
