As The Pandemic Body Count Rises, Republicans Worry About Confirming Trump’s Judges
Common sense would tell one that even Republican lawmakers find President Donald Trump to be an unsavory character. After all, he is a pathological liar, an admitted sexual predator, and a thrice-married serial adulterer.
Trump would not be even the millionth choice for the family values crowd to carry their mantle. Yet, they stick by their man, no matter how egregious his offenses. Why? Because he is a vehicle to do their bidding.
One of the biggest tactics for Republicans to shape the trajectory of the nation’s future has been to transform the courts. They had a specific list for Trump to pick from, put out by the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, and he has stuck to that.
That is how we got Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court.
They figure it is worth putting up with Trump in order to get all the voter suppression activists, anti-choice neanderthals, and homophobic bigots they can on the court for a generation.
Now, however, all of those plans have come to a grinding halt, as we are in the middle of a global pandemic that keeps claiming more and more lives by the very hour. Trump’s shaping of the judiciary will have to wait as the body count from coronavirus rises, the world shuts down, and the economy continues to tank with no end in sight.
According to reporting from Politico, GOP lawmakers are starting to panic. They had hoped to stack the court system from top to bottom with right-wing ideologues, but the pandemic now has to take precedence. Per their reporting:
“The Senate’s streak of judicial confirmations is on hiatus as senators confront the coronavirus outbreak, leaving more than three dozen nominees in limbo.”
It has been Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s life’s dream to stack the nation’s courts with ideological conservatives, but right now saving lives has to be the priority. Imagine that — American lives being more important than one more anti-gay, anti-abortion judge to gleefully rip the rights away from American citizens case by case and to suppress the votes of demographics they know would rather walk barefoot over hot coals than vote Republican.
Senator John Thune (R-SD) says:
“If we’re not there, it’s hard to push them through. There have been several that have been nominated now for the circuits that have to have confirmation hearings, and that means we’ve got to be in session in order to be able to move them. It’s definitely affected the schedule that way.”
If anyone ever had any doubt about what it is Republicans actually care about, there you have it right there. These people only care about their careers, political power, and shaping the nation in their own image, the number of COVID-19 patients being loaded into refrigerated trucks because the morgues are overflowing be damned.
