Articles of Impeachment Against Trump To Be Introduced Today by Democrat
Since the very beginning of his tenure as President, Donald Trump has been dogged with talks of impeachment. With Democrats in the minority, however, there was not much that could be done to move forward with talks.
The situation dramatically changes today, as Democrats have taken control of Congress. Brad Sherman (D-CA) has wasted no time in going after Trump as he will be introducing articles of impeachment against the president.
These specific articles, which focus on the firing of James Comey, are not new. They were first introduced in November of 2017 by a group of 6 Democratic lawmakers (Luis Gutierrez, D-Illinois; Al Green, D-Texas; Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio; Adriano Espaillat, D-New York; and John Yarmuth, D-Kentucky).
The measure never gained support for a number of reasons. Many Democrats wanted to let the Mueller investigation fully run its course before seeking impeachment. Leaders also felt that an attempt to impeach the president could rile up his base prior to the midterm elections of 2018.
Many Democrats will still want to wait until Robert Mueller releases the full scope of his findings. Sherman disagrees, saying, ““There is no reason it shouldn’t be before the Congress. Every day, Donald Trump shows that leaving the White House would be good for our country.”
There will be 235 Democrats in the new Congress and there will be a variety of opinions on what to do about Trump. It will be up to new Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, to create a united front among the group.
Sherman feels the Trump question should be dealt with right away, “Every member of the House will have to address [the issue] whether there are formal articles of impeachment pending.”
