Another Swing and a Miss For Doocy in White House Briefing Room
By now it’s way beyond obvious that Fox News’ Peter Doocy sees his turn in the White House briefing room pool rotation as an opportunity to do a “gotcha” on Press Secretary Jen Psaki. His questions are only designed to elicit a response that the network’s anchors can rehash during the news cycle and its chyron writers can crawl across the bottom of the screen.
He hasn’t yet succeeded but he tried again on Monday. When Psaki called on Doocy, as she does every time he’s in the briefing room, he asked the press secretary about the Biden administration’s decision to deploy resources of the Federal Emergency Management Agency along the U.S.-Mexico border to deal with an influx of unaccompanied minor children.
“Does FEMA’s arrival at the border mean that the administration feels that what’s happening down at the border is a disaster?” Doocy asked. Psaki’s response was pure Beltway gold. Smiling and without missing a beat, Psaki said, “I know that we get into the fun of labels around here, but I would say our focus is on solutions and this is one of the steps that the president thought … would help expedite processing, help ensure that people who are coming across the border have access to health and medical care. The numbers are enormous and clearly this is a challenge.”
Undaunted, Doocy tried another tack to get Psaki to utter the word “disaster” when she allowed him a follow-up question. “With FEMA, their mission is helping people before, during and after disasters,” he said. “We’ve heard you say it’s a problem, it’s a challenge. Is it now a disaster?”
Psaki, of course, didn’t bite. “I appreciate the opportunity and I do like your mask,” she said, before reiterating the Biden administration’s commitment to providing necessary assistance at the southern border.
