An Irate Trump Slams Mitch McConnell, Takes Credit for His Senate Victory
For the last four years, Mitch McConnell has gone along with pretty much anything Donald Trump wanted to do. The Senate Majority Leader was set to take on all criticism as long as he could push the Republican agenda forward. But when the president lost his reelection bid in November, he became a problem for McConnell.
Upon Joe Biden’s certification by the Electoral College, McConnell congratulated Biden and Kamala Harris on their win. In Trump’s mind, this was a cardinal sin. And on Monday night, Trump ripped McConnell and took credit for his November senate win against Amy McGrath.
Politico’s Olivia Beavers shared an email going out to Trump’s supporters, writing, “The White House is sending out this email to some congressional offices, where Trump appears to be taking credit for boosting Senate Majority Leader McConnell in his race ag. McGrath through endorsements. ‘Sadly, Mitch forgot. He was the first one off the ship!’ it reads.”

Of course, McConnell wasn’t in much of a race. He’s held his senate seat since 1985. McGrath was able to raise huge amounts of money, around $93 million. But still, McConnell defeated by close to 20% points.
Donald Trump could still be of use to the Republicans, especially in the looming Georgia senate race. But Trump’s frequent moaning about the way that state cheated him is probably doing more harm than good. And as long as the president isn’t benefiting the GOP, McConnell will pay him little mind.
