Amy Klobuchar: Amy Coney Barrett’s Nomination to the Supreme Court a ‘Sham’
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), a member of the Judiciary Committee whose job it is to grill presidential appointments to the Supreme Court, told reporters on Monday that President Donald Trump’s selection of Appellate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s vacant seat is all about dismantling Barack Obama’s signature health care law.
“You don’t have to be a lawyer or a senator to figure out where this nominee is coming from when it comes to the Affordable Care Act. We know where she’s coming from and the president knows this too,” Klobuchar said at a press briefing following the start of Barrett’s contentious and controversial confirmation hearings.
Trump, the Senator continued, “has made it very clear in his tweets and his statements that he wants a Court thats gonna overturn Obamacare and that he wants a Court that in his words are gonna ‘count the ballots,’ and he thinks this election is somehow gonna end up in court.”
Klobuchar admitted that Senate Democrats, who are in the minority, have no foreseeable means of stopping the Republican majority from confirming Barrett to the Supreme Court, which she said Republicans have turned into a “sham” of a process.
“My point today is, you cannot divorce this nominee from the moment we’re in, in time. And that we do not have some secret, clever, procedural way to stop this sham. Let’s be honest,” Klobuchar said. “And as good as we are, it’s probably not going to be some brilliant cross-examination that is going to change the trajectory of this nomination. But there is one thing that will.”
Klobuchar said that the American people need to recognize “exactly what the Republican Party and this administration are doing right now and how it’s going to affect their lives,” and vote them out.
“Because this is not Donald Trump’s country,” Klobuchar added. “This is your country, America’s country, and this should not be Donald Trump’s judge. It should be your judge.”
During her opening statement at the hearings earlier in the day, Klobuchar told Barrett personally that she believes Republicans have turned the process into a “sham”:
Yes, Judge, I think this hearing is a sham. I think it shows real messed up priorities from the Republican Party. But I am here to do my job, to tell the truth. To all Americans, we don’t have some clever procedural way to stop this sham, to stop them from rushing through a nominee. But we have a secret weapon that they don’t have. We have Americans who are watching, who work hard every day, believe in our country and the rule of law, whether they are Democrats, Republicans, or Independent.
Later, on Twitter, Klobuchar again encouraged voters to reject Republicans, who are subverting democracy in order to strip health care away from millions of Americans while the COVID-19 crisis continues to worsen.
This isn’t a rush to justice. This is a rush to put in a justice – a justice who will overturn the Affordable Care Act in the middle of a pandemic,” Klobuchar wrote. “America, today you can see clearly the misplaced priorities of Republicans. And it’s in your hands to change it. VOTE.”
