American’s Aren’t Going to Care: Joe Scarborough Calls on Democrats to Call Mitch McConnell’s Filibuster Bluff
For the last 6 years, Mitch McConnell was the Senate Majority Leader. He wielded that power with an iron fist, especially when it came to the Supreme Court. McConnell was able to block the nomination of Merrick Garland and push through 3 Conservative nominees with essentially no Democratic support.
The Kentucky senator, though, is not doing well now that he out of power. The other day, McConnell made threats against Democrats if they were to abolish the filibuster. During his Thursday show, Joe Scarborough told Democratic leaders that it’s time to call McConnell’s bluff.
The Morning Joe host said in regards to abolishing the filibuster, “I think they’re probably believing they have to do it, and politically the political fallout will come from however the Republicans decide to act two years from now, if they take the majority.”
Scarborough continued, “What we have now are presidents who can’t pass legislation, so they sign executive orders, and then the next president comes in, and they sign executive orders that overturn the last president’s executive orders. If that’s going to happen, it might as well happen with legislation, where actually the House and the Senate actually function the way they’re supposed to function.”
The host closed:
“Anybody who believes that the American people are going to be shocked and stunned and deeply saddened with filibuster reform or if they change the rules of the filibuster, that’s process Americans aren’t going to care. That’s not what they’re going to vote about two years from now. They’re going to vote for the actual legislation that does get passed.”
