Alyssa Milano: “The Red MAGA Hat is the New White Hood”

Alyssa Milano compared Trump supporters to the Klu Klux Klan on Twitter yesterday. In a Tweet, the actress and activist, who has been vocal in her condemnation of President Trump, said, “the red MAGA hat is the new white hood,” adding that, “without white boys being able to empathize with other people, humanity will continue to destroy itself.”

Her comments came after a group of high school boys wearing the iconic red Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats appeared to get into a verbal altercation with group of Native American activists at a march in Washington D.C. on Saturday.

In a video of the incident widely shared on social media, a student wearing a MAGA hat squared off with a Native American activist near the Lincoln Memorial in the nation’s capital.

The students, identified as a group of boys from Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky, were in Washington to participate in an anti-abortion rally. Nathan Phillips, the Native American veteran, described how he saw the students “attacking” another group of “four black individuals” from the Black Hebrew Israelites group. Phillips said he put himself between the two groups to defuse the situation.

In a video Milano shared on her Twitter page, Phillips recalls the Covington Catholic High School students were chanting “build that wall, build that wall”.  The students claim that they were not partaking in any racist chants or actions.

Responding to the incident, Milano said, “let’s not forget– this entire event happened because a group of boys went on a school-sanctioned trip to protest against a woman’s right to her own body and reproductive healthcare. It is not debatable that bigotry was at play from the start.”

In a separate tweet, the star of Charmed and Insatiable lamented, “this is Trump’s America. And it brought me to tears.” She asked, “what are we teaching our young people? Why is this okay? How is this okay? Please help me understand. Because right now I feel like my heart is living outside of my body.”
