Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has Gained 1.2 Million Twitter Followers in 2 Months as Her Messages Resonate on Social Media

While Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has suddenly become many Republicans’ favorite target as of late, her message seems to be resonating with the American people — at least if her Twitter following is any indication.

Just 9 months ago, in April of last year, Ocasio-Cortez had just 17,300 followers on Twitter.  In the time since, as she has built up her grassroots campaign, going on to defeat fellow Democrat Joe Crowley in the primaries for his U.S. House of Representatives seat, which he had held for nearly 20 years, her following on Twitter began to really take off.

Just two months ago, Ocasio-Cortez had approximately 941,000 followers on Twitter, which is more than most U.S. House Representatives.  However, in the last two months, which represents the time between her midterm election win and her first week in Congress, she has seen her following soar to approximately 2.2 million users.

This number represents more followers than Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (1.89 million), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (746,000), and GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy (210,000).

Perhaps age is a factor. Ocasio-Cortez is currently the youngest member of Congress at age 29, and Twitter, a social media platform, is utilized mainly by the younger generations.

Ocasio-Cortez’s messages and ideas, however, seem to resonate with many Americans, no matter how radical some of her views may seem.  Perhaps her radical, yet often-perceived sensible ideologies are why she has so many people following her every tweet.
