Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) appeared to be the lone voice of reason in a party that some say has gone mad by tribalistic partisanship and facing massive pressure from Republicans, decided to vote her conscience and oppose Brett Kavanaugh in the final vote on Saturday. Now. she’s facing a seemingly vindictive Alaska GOP.
The Associated Press reported that Alaska’s GOP is pressuring Murkowski to send its state central committee any information she thinks may be relevant to its decision to reprimand her.
Party Chairman Tuckerman Babcock says the committee is weighing whether or not to issue a statement withdrawing support for her, which would then allow party officials to look for a replacement and ask that she not seek re-election as a Republican. Despite apparent outrage from Alaskans, Murkowski stands by her decision. She told reporters that if she worried about political repercussions she wouldn’t be able to do the job Alaskans expect her to do.
President Trump weighed in a Murkowski in a fashion that appears to be supportive of political retribution.
I think she will never recover from this. I think the people from Alaska will never forgive her for what she did, Trump said, predicting that Murkowski would have a tough primary race in 2022, when she is up for reelection.
The possible punitive actions by the Alaska GOP appear to be the latest example of toxic partisanship infecting the sanctity and function of our republic.
