Alabama Paper Publishes Editorial Calling for the Return of the KKK

If the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville proved anything, it’s that white supremacists have become more open about their views. This was the case of Democrat-Reporter publisher, Goodloe Sutton, who wrote an editorial asking for the return of the Ku Klux Klan. The article, titled, Klan needs to ride again, was published in the Linden, Alabama based newspaper on February 14th.

In the piece, Sutton rails against the “socialism” he feels is destroying America. The publisher wrote, “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama. They do not understand how to eliminate expenses when money is needed in other areas. This socialist-communist ideology sounds good to the ignorant, the uneducated, and the simple-minded people.”

When asked to explain his thinking by the Montgomery Advertiser, he replied, “If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out D.C., we’d all been better off. We’ll get the hemp ropes out, loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them.”

Sutton’s article went viral after it was discovered by Auburn student journalist, Chip Brownlee. Brownlee tweeted, “Check the date. A paper published this in 2019. Wow.”

The piece also caught the eye of Democratic Alabama Senator, Doug Jones. Jones wrote of the editorial, “I have seen what happens when we stand by while people-especially those with influence- publish racist, hateful views. Words matter. Actions matter. Resign now!
