Ahead of Summit With Biden, Trump-Putin Bromance Endures
It seems like the Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin bromance is alive and well. In advance of his meeting next week with President Joe Biden, the Russian president in an interview with NBC News described Trump as a “colorful individual” and said he believes he can work with Biden.
Putin offered this take on the twice-impeached, one-term former president. “Well even now, I believe that former U.S. president Mr. Trump is an extraordinary individual, talented individual, otherwise he would not have become U.S. president. He is a colorful individual. You may like him or not. And, but he didn’t come from the U.S. establishment. He had not been part of big-time politics before, and some like it, some don’t like it but that is a fact.”
Clearly Putin is on Trump’s mind even though he’s been out of office for six months. On Thursday Trump emailed reporters a snarky statement wishing Biden luck in his upcoming meeting with the former KGB spy chief. “Good luck to Biden in dealing with President Putin — don’t fall asleep during the meeting, and please give him my warmest regards!”
Of Biden, Putin said he is “radically different from Trump because President Biden is a career man. He has spent virtually his entire adulthood in politics. That’s a different kind of person, and it is my great hope that, yes, there are some advantages, some disadvantages, but there will not be any impulse-based movements on behalf of the sitting U.S. president.”
Putin also said, “We have a bilateral relationship that has deteriorated to its lowest point in recent years,” although he didn’t indicate whether he feels Trump or Biden bear responsibility.
