Adam Schiff has been a familiar target for Republicans since the inquiry into Donald Trump’s interaction with Ukraine began. The President himself typically refers to the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee as Liddle Adam or Shifty Schiff.
Over the weekend, the California congressman did some punching back against his political rivals. During an appearance on ABC’s This Week, Schiff ripped into Attorney General William Barr and accused him of “weaponizing the Department of Justice.”
The House Intelligence Chair was asked about reports that Barr had opened an investigation into the origins of the Russia probe. He answered:
“If these reports are correct and now Bill Barr’s Justice Department is doing a criminal investigation of people who properly looked into Russian interference in our election in the FBI or the intelligence agencies, it means that Bill Barr on the president’s behalf is weaponizing the Justice Department to go after the president’s enemies.”
Schiff then discussed some of the people tasked with operating the investigation. “You can assign good people to do an illegitimate investigation,” he said. “You can assign good people to investigate the president’s rivals. It doesn’t mean it’s any less tainted.”
The California congressman certainly has the attention of the President. In late September, Trump tweeted, “Rep. Adam Schiff illegally made up a FAKE & terrible statement, pretended it to be mine as the most important part of my call to the Ukrainian President, and read it aloud to Congress and the American people. It bore NO relationship to what I said on the call. Arrest for Treason?”
