Susan Collins has served as a Maine senator since 1997. For most of her tenure, she’s had a really easy time. Her approval ratings were high and she was easily reelected every 4 years. And then Donald Trump came along.
Collins has made enemies on both sides of the aisle by sometimes siding against Trump and sometimes siding with him. The Maine senator has now encountered a fierce challenge to her seat from Democrat Sara Gideon. And in a desperate attempt to hold onto her job, she’s engaging Karl Rove and Newt Gingrich.
Like Collins, Gingrich and Rove have been around Republican politics for a very long time. And their times of power came long before the reign of Donald Trump.
Gingrich is helping Collins by sending campaign emails. One of these read, “I’m contacting you today because I know you support Susan Collins, but I need you to make a donation to Susan’s campaign before it’s too late. The entire country is following her fundraising numbers and scrutinizing her every move. We need to rally behind Susan and support her with everything we go.”
Rove has also been sending messages to Maine Republicans. “We need measured, thoughtful leaders with integrity like Senator Susan Collins who’ll stand up for their constituents back home and not cave to the radicals pushing the Democratic Party left,” he wrote.
Collins is considered to be one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the entire senate. The polling average from the website, 538.com shows Gideon with anywhere from a 1% to 8% advantage.
