The 7 Greatest Actors Who Have Never Won an Oscar

It is really surprising that these talented actors/actresses have yet to win an Academy Award (AKA Oscar). I honestly hope Glenn Close wins an Oscar before it’s too late, otherwise the legendary actress will have to settle for the Academy Honorary Award, the award that recognizes exceptional people in film who never received an Oscar. All seven actors on this list deserve that award (plus an actual Oscar, of course).

Number One: Tom Cruise. Cruise has been nominated for three Academy Awards, but he has yet to win the award. He was nominated twice for Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July (1990) and Jerry Maguire (1997). In 2000, Cruise was up for the Best Supporting Actor award for his work in Magnolia (1999).

Number Two: Robert Downey Jr. Even with his extensive career in film, Downey Jr. has only accrued two Oscar nominations. Those two nominations include Best Actor for Chaplin in 1993 and Best Supporting Actor for Tropic Thunder in 2009.

Number Three: Glenn Close. The legendary actress has been nominated for six Oscars. She has three Best Supporting Actress nominations for her work in The World According to Garp (1983), The Big Chill (1984), and The Natural (1985). Close was also nominated three times in the Best Actress category for Fatal Attraction (1988), Dangerous Liaisons (1989), and Albert Nobbs (2012).

Number Four: Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio has been nominated for five Academy Awards. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). DiCaprio has also been up for three Best Actor awards for The Aviator (2005), Blood Diamond (2007), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2014). The Wolf of Wall Street was nominated for Best Picture, and DiCaprio received the nomination for producing the film.

Number Five: Sigourney Weaver. Weaver hasn’t received an Academy Award nomination since the late 1980s, and that fact alone is shocking. She has been nominated twice for Best Actress for Aliens in 1987 and Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey in 1989. She also received a Best Supporting Actress nomination in 1989 for Working Girl.

Number Six: Johnny Depp. Depp has received three Academy Award nominations. All of his nominations are for the Best Actor award, which he received for his work in Pirates of the Caribbean (2004), Finding Neverland (2005), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2008).

Number Seven: Annette Bening. Bening has been nominated for four Academy Awards during her career. Her first nomination was in the Best Supporting Actress category in 1991 for her work in The Grifters. Bening’s other nominations were for Best Actress in American Beauty (2000), Being Julia (2005), and The Kids Are All Right (2011).
