49ers Cheerleader Kneels During the National Anthem
For the first time, a cheerleader took a knee last night during the national anthem at an NFL game held in San Francisco between the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers.
While the rest of the cheerleaders thrust their pom-poms aloft across their chests during the rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, one brunet cheerleader knelt with her hands placed on her hips.
According to the Huffington Post, the cheerleader for the San Francisco 49ers struck a pose similar to that taken by former 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.
The cheerleader’s reasons for taking a knee are still unknown.
Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest the unfair and discriminatory treatment minorities receive from police officers. His protest drew support from other NFL players and the gesture of taking a knee was adopted by several players across the league.
However, unlike when Colin Kaepernick began taking a knee in 2016, the cheerleader’s gesture went widely unnoticed.
Former Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleader Michele Wright offered an explanation. She told Elle, “cheerleaders are little fish in a big pond”, adding that she didn’t believe the gesture would catch on amongst cheerleaders. “Although they are of great worth and value to the football experience and their respective communities, many are undervalued. So to remain neutral, they wouldn’t take a knee”, she said.
