Mass shootings, especially those featuring military-style assault rifles, have been rocking the United States for many years. Gun control will be an increasingly important topic for each of the candidates competing for the Democratic nomination.
This morning, New Jersey Senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Cory Booker, will offer some insight into his plan. According to the Daily Beast, Booker wants to create a national gun licensing program.
“As president, we will make commonsense changes to our gun laws such as requiring a license to purchase a gun that includes universal background checks, banning assault weapons, and closing the loopholes that allow domestic abusers and people on terrorist watch lists to get their hands on a gun. I am sick and tired of hearing thoughts and prayers for the communities that have been shattered by gun violence—it is time for bold action.”
The licensing plan would be extraordinarily thorough and aim to make sure guns aren’t ending up in the wrong hands. Under the senator’s proposal, “an individual could seek out a license at a local office, comparing it to applying for passport renewal. Upon doing so, they would submit fingerprints, sit for an interview, and show completion of a certified gun-safety course. The FBI would then verify all the submitted materials and run a comprehensive background check before issuing the federal gun license.”
Booker is not the only candidate to deliver a gun control plan. California Senator Kamala Harris has pledged to take executive action on gun control if the matter isn’t addressed within 100 days of her presidency. The issue will continue to be prominent as the Democratic debates and primaries begin.
