The Internet: 11 Things You Didn’t Know (Part 2)

If you loved the first set of factoids about the web in Part 1 of what you didn’t know about the internet, Part 2 is sure to blow your mind! Read on to find out why we need webcams, how the web became such a hit, and so much more!

Number Six: The HTML STD? HTML, an acronym for HyperText Markup Language, is an extensive set of coding that forms the internet. Essentially, it is the language of the world wide web. However unbelievable it may seem, about one in every ten Americans don’t know this. They think it’s a sexually transmitted disease.

Number Five: Your Addiction is a Disorder. The hype that the internet has gained in today’s generation is certainly getting ridiculous. Actually, the concept of someone having an “internet addiction” has become such a problem, that many researchers are debating on whether or not it should be classified as a medical disorder.

Number Four: Coffee Pot Webcam. When thinking about the possible origins of the creation of webcams, one might assume they were created to solve a big problem, such as a security issue, or even just enhancement in communication. However, that is not the case. In reality, the first webcam was used to monitor the progress of a drip coffee pot. Real world problems.

Number Three: New Sites Every Day. On a daily basis, more than 100,000 brand new “dot com” web domains are created. That is over 100,000 new registered web pages for you to discover, popping up out of the blue every day.

Number Two: It Only Took Five Years. As a new idea, the concept of the world wide web boomed. It only took five years to gain popularity on an international scale, gaining over fifty million users in the first five years after its debut. Arguably, the fastest-catching invention of our time. It took the television more than double the amount of time to achieve such status.

Number One: Love Going Digital. Thanks to the technology and networking of the internet, dating sites have popped up and gained popularity over the years. Today, it is estimated that 19% of U.S. couples, almost a fifth of all couples, met online. They have their computer screens and technology to thank for helping to find the love of their life. What an invention!
