10 Year-Old Student Dies of COVID, Parents Say Her Teacher Made Her Act as a Nurse to Sick Child
Thankfully, the COVID-19 virus doesn’t seem to affect children as seriously as it affects adults. And GOP lawmakers have used that fact to call for eased restrictions in schools. Still, some children have contracted the virus and become seriously ill. And a small but startling number of children have died of the virus.
So the rumored actions of a school teacher at Hillpoint Elementary School in Virginia are alarming. According to the parents of Theresa Sperry, their 10 year old daughter died after being made to act as a nurse to a sick child.
Explaining that Theresa often accompanied other children to the nurse’s office, Jeff Sperry explained, “That was her classroom job. And she said that if the kids were sick and needed to go home, she had to go get their book bag and take it back.”
Mother Nicole Sperry wrote on Facebook, “[Theresa] would have continued to be here if people would have stopped sending their sick kids to school. Her teacher at Hillpoint gave her the job of ‘nurse.’ She was required to walk all sick students in her class to the nurses office.”
The school responded to the accusations, “The protocol at Hillpoint Elementary School is for the classroom teacher or any adult to contact the main office with a Code ‘C.’ When this occurs, one of the administrators or school nurse will come to the classroom to pick up the student. We are still investigating to ensure that this process was followed with fidelity.”
