The world of anime is a big one, and there are many fans to prove it. One subsection of anime includes mature anime series, of which there are many. Whether they involve blood, sex, or are just plain shocking, these 10 mature anime series are the best of the best. Check them out for yourself below!

Number Ten: Basilisk (2005). Produced in 2005 by Gonzo Studios, Basilisk follows two ninja clans in the year 1614. The series includes many bloody battles between the ninjas.

Number Nine: Black Lagoon (2006). Only two seasons of Black Lagoon ever aired, but it quickly became a hit with anime fans everywhere. The series follows Lagoon Company, a group of pirate mercenaries that transports smuggled goods in a boat, aptly called Black Lagoon.

Number Eight: Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995 – 1996). Produced by Tatsunoko Productions and Gainax, Neon Genesis Evangelion is an apocalyptic anime series. It is set in futuristic Tokyo and follows Shinji, a teenager recruited to man the Evangelion, a machine created to fight monsters known as Angels.

Number Seven: RIN ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne (2008). Both gory and erotic, RIN ~ Daughters of Mnemosyne has it all.This six-episode series is set in modern Tokyo and centers on a female private investigator named Rin Asougi.

Number Six: Hellsing Ultimate (2006 – 2012). Hellsing Ultimate is an original video animation (OVA) series. With plenty of dark and disturbing imagery, this 10 episode-long series was remembered by many and continues to be rewatched.

Number Five: Claymore (2007). Claymore is a series based on manga of the same name. It only ran for one season, but many believe that was due to a choice to make the endings of the final two episodes different from the manga series. Fans of dramatic anime should give Claymore a watch.

Number Four: Blue Gender (1999 – 2000). Created by Japanese studio AIC, Blue Gender contains lots of violence, nudity and sex. The series is set in the decade of 2030, and it focuses on a species called the Blue, who are insect mutants.

Number Three: Attack on Titan (2013 – ). One of the more visually disturbing series on our list, Attack on Titan revolves around a world under siege from the Titans, who are big humanoids that senselessly eat and murder humans. It is the only series on this list that is still in production.

Number Two: Berserk (1997 – 1998). There were 25 episodes made of Berserk, which was produced by Oriental Light and Magic. The storyline follows themes of ambition and friendship with main characters named Guts and Griffith.

Number One: Elfen Lied (2004). Finally, number one on our list of the top 10 mature anime series is Elfen Lied, which ran for 13 episodes in 2004. The series features an immense amount of nudity and gore, which critics have both praised and condemned. Either way, for thrills and chills, Elfen Lied is the way to go.
